If anyone on your team could reasonably come into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials on the job, OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) requires documented training before they start work and at least once a year after that. In California the requirement is enforced by Cal/OSHA under section 5193, which adds a written Exposure Control Plan reviewed annually and a dedicated sharps injury log.
This is the single most commonly missed requirement we see in compliance assessments, and one of the most commonly cited in healthcare inspections. The training itself is two hours. Anyone handling sharps, specimens, or wound care has occupational exposure under the standard, front office staff who handle instruments count too.
Tattoo, piercing & body art studios
California counties require BBP training for registration in most jurisdictions, and inspectors ask for the certificate.
First responders & security
EMTs, lifeguards, school staff designated as responders, and security teams expected to give first aid.
Custodial & facilities staff
Employees who clean up after incidents or handle regulated waste containers are covered by the same annual requirement.

What skipping it costs
Missing annual BBP training is a standing item on OSHA’s most-cited list for healthcare. A serious violation runs up to $16,550 in 2026, willful or repeat up to $165,514, per violation, and an exposure incident with no training record turns into both a citation and a liability problem. OSHA requires training before an employee starts work with occupational exposure and again at least annually. Training is also required when procedures or tasks change in a way that affects exposure. California enforces its own bloodborne pathogens standard, 8 CCR 5193, which goes further than federal OSHA: the written Exposure Control Plan must be reviewed and updated annually with input from frontline staff, sharps injuries must be recorded in a dedicated log, and safer needle devices must be evaluated. Our curriculum covers both, which matters because Cal/OSHA, not federal OSHA, inspects California facilities.
