Overview
Mail-back medical waste disposal is a sharps and biohazard waste program designed for low-volume generators, practices, mobile providers, and home-health professionals who do not need scheduled truck pickup. You order a pre-paid kit, fill it with sharps containers or regulated medical waste, seal the box, and drop it at any USPS location.
Bay Area Compliance ships each kit with everything you need to comply with 49 CFR 173.197 (the federal rule governing sharps and Regulated Medical Waste packaging by mail), proper inner and outer packaging, absorbents, biohazard labels, and a return-postage label tied to your account. When the kit lands at our processing facility, it is shredded and sterilized through our EnvoMed 80 system, the same NETZERO|360 recovery path used for our scheduled-pickup customers, and you receive a Certificate of Treatment and Recovery that documents proper destruction.

Who Uses This Service
Single-provider clinics & solo practitioners
Dental, optometry, primary care, podiatry, and behavioral health offices that generate a few sharps containers per quarter and do not justify a route pickup.

Mobile providers who collect sharps and biohazard waste in patient homes and need a defensible disposal path that does not involve hauling waste back to a central facility.
Veterinary, tattoo studios & body-art shops
Small practices regulated as biohazard waste generators that need a simple, USPS-friendly compliance solution without long-term contracts.
Schools, universities & athletic programs
Nurse offices, training rooms, and student-health centers that generate intermittent sharps waste and need a low-friction, on-demand disposal option.
Remote facilities & multi-site operations
Facilities in rural service areas, satellite offices, or temporary clinics where a route truck is impractical but compliance is still required.
Pharmacies & DEA reverse-distribution
Small-volume pharmaceutical waste, expired controlled substances, and chemotherapy residue that needs DEA-compliant chain of custody with witness destruction.

Regulatory Framework
Mail-back sharps and medical-waste disposal is regulated under multiple federal and state frameworks. The kit, the carrier, and the destination facility all matter for compliance.
49 CFR 173.197
U.S. DOT, RMW Packaging
Federal rule governing packaging, labeling, and transport of Regulated Medical Waste by mail. Specifies inner-container puncture resistance, outer-box construction, and biohazard labeling. BAC kits ship pre-certified to this standard.
USPS Publication 52
Hazardous, Restricted & Perishable Mail
USPS rules for mailing sharps and RMW. Specifies acceptable shipping methods, surface-only transit, and the labels and markings required on the outer box.
California H&SC §117600 et seq.
Medical Waste Management Act
California-specific generator and transporter rules. BAC is a CDPH-permitted medical waste transporter and a DTSC-registered hazardous waste transporter, with treatment and plastic recovery at our California facility.
29 CFR 1910.1030
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens
Federal OSHA rule requiring sharps containers that are closable, puncture-resistant, leakproof, and color-coded or biohazard-labeled. All BAC mail-back kits meet this standard.
Penalty Warning
Improper sharps disposal can result in OSHA citations starting at $16,550 per violation, plus state-level fines that can exceed $25,000 per occurrence in California.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sharps container disposal by mail is a service where small-volume generators (clinics, home-health providers, schools) ship their used sharps containers to a licensed processor through the USPS using pre-paid, DOT-compliant mail-back kits. It is a fully regulated alternative to scheduled-truck pickup for facilities that do not generate enough waste to justify a route service.
Yes. The U.S. Postal Service is the only carrier federally authorized to transport Regulated Medical Waste, and it is regulated under 49 CFR 173.197 and USPS Publication 52. BAC kits are pre-certified to both standards and ship from any USPS location nationwide.
Mail-back kits come in 1-gallon, 3-gallon, 5-gallon, and 8-gallon sizes. The 1-gallon kit suits a solo dentist or veterinary practice generating a handful of sharps per month. The 8-gallon kit handles multi-provider clinics or home-health groups consolidating across patients. Pharmaceutical and chemotherapy waste use specialized kits with reinforced inner containers.
Pricing depends on kit size, waste type, and whether you choose a single order or a recurring subscription. Subscription customers save on per-kit cost and lock in priority processing. Contact us for a quote tailored to your facility's volume, the assessment takes about 10 minutes and is free.
Most kits are processed within 7 business days of arrival at our facility. The Certificate of Treatment and Recovery is delivered through your NETZERO|360 dashboard as soon as destruction is complete, with documentation of weight processed, treatment method, and downstream-plastic destination.
BAC's mail-back program runs every kit through the EnvoMed 80 system, the same NETZERO|360 recovery process used by our scheduled-pickup customers. After shredding and STAATT-IV-level sterilization, the plastic is diverted to virgin-grade recycling and re-enters the circular plastics supply chain. We do not incinerate or send mail-back waste to landfill.
DEA-controlled substances require specialized reverse-distribution and witness-destruction protocols. We offer a separate DEA-compliant mail-back program for controlled substances, it uses different packaging and chain-of-custody documentation than standard sharps kits. Ask us about the controlled-substance mail-back option when you request a quote.
Yes. Mail-back kits ship via USPS to all 50 states. Because USPS handles the transport, there are no fuel surcharges, no zone-pricing penalties, and no service-area exclusions for rural customers. Treatment and plastic recovery happen at our California facility.
