HazWOPER 40-Hour Training, OSHA + Cal/OSHA Compliant

Three groups under OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.120: workers on uncontrolled hazardous waste site cleanups, employees who respond to emergency releases of hazardous substances, and staff at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. In California the same requirements are enforced by Cal/OSHA through Title 8 section 5192. If your team investigates, cleans up, or responds to hazardous substance releases as part of the job, they need HazWOPER training at the level that matches their role, and general site workers need the 40-hour course.

The 40-hour course is the full initial training for general site workers who are regularly on hazardous waste operations. The 24-hour level applies to occasional site workers with limited tasks and low exposure who are unlikely to be exposed over permissible limits. Our course is the full 40-hour version, the credential most employers and site operators ask for, and it more than covers a worker who would only need the 24-hour minimum.

The 40-hour initial training stays current through 8 hours of refresher training every year. If the annual refresher lapses, the employer has to evaluate whether the employee needs to repeat initial training, so it is much cheaper to keep the refresher cycle on schedule. Not quite. For general site workers covered by 8 CCR section 5192(e)(3)(A), the 40 hours of instruction must be followed by at least three days of actual field experience under direct supervision. The instruction happens with us, online plus the hands-on lab; the supervised field days happen on the job at your site. We document the course completion, including the practical skills evaluation, and provide an employer record for the required supervised field experience.

A purely online 40-hour certificate with no hands-on component is the thing to be careful with: the standard expects demonstrated competency, and donning PPE, working a decon line, and using monitoring instruments are not skills a click-through course can verify.
