What This Means for Your Facility
Waste diversion rate is calculated as the total weight of waste diverted from landfill (through recycling, composting, reuse, material recovery, and other recovery methods) divided by the total waste generated, expressed as a percentage. For healthcare facilities, this metric encompasses all waste streams, regulated medical waste, hazardous waste, pharmaceutical waste, recyclable materials, and general solid waste. California's AB 341 mandates that businesses generating four or more cubic yards of waste per week implement recycling programs, and SB 1383 requires organic waste diversion.
Healthcare waste diversion is more complex than in most industries because a significant portion of the waste stream is regulated and cannot be simply recycled. Biohazardous waste must be treated before any material recovery is possible, pharmaceutical waste has strict disposal requirements, and confidential documents require certified destruction. Achieving high diversion rates requires waste stream analysis, proper segregation to prevent contamination of recyclable materials, and partnerships with treatment facilities that recover materials after processing.
BayArea Compliance's approach to waste diversion centers on hand-sorting at local processing facilities within 50 miles, waste-to-virgin-plastic recycling through our EnvoMed 80 shredder system, and rigorous tracking. Every pound is documented, what was generated, what was diverted, what was sent to landfill, and why. NETZERO|360 converts this data into real-time diversion rate metrics that facilities can report to stakeholders, satisfy ESG questionnaires, and use to identify further diversion opportunities.
